Forward Deployed Engineers (FDEs) are among the best-paid customer-facing technical roles in 2026, because companies need people who can both write production code and get an AI product working inside a customer's real environment. This page collects only published, checkable numbers: salary trackers built from job postings, self-reported compensation sites, and pay ranges that companies list on their own job posts. Every figure links to its source and carries the date we checked it. We do not estimate or invent numbers. Where a source is secondhand, we say so.
All figures checked October 16, 2026 unless noted. Posted ranges are usually base salary only; equity and bonus come on top at most companies. Self-reported "total comp" (levels.fyi) includes stock and bonus, so it is not directly comparable to posted base ranges.

The numbers differ because the methods differ: posting trackers measure base pay that companies advertise, while levels.fyi measures what employees report earning in total. Taken together, a reasonable reading is that a typical US FDE offer in late 2026 carries a base around $170K to $250K, and total compensation above that once equity is counted.

Pay by level
Few public sources break FDE pay out by formal level, and companies use different ladders, so we do not publish a made-up level table. What the public data does show:
- Percentiles as a proxy for seniority. On levels.fyi, the 25th percentile ($176K total comp) roughly reflects early-career hires, the median ($220K) mid-level, and the 75th to 90th percentiles ($300K to $362K) senior and staff FDEs.
- Two-level postings. Scale AI posts a standard and a senior band ($180K–$225K vs $216K–$270K), a useful real-world look at the step from mid to senior (Fractionals).
- Management. Fractionals recorded FDE manager postings at OpenAI ($302K–$385K) and Anthropic ($320K–$405K) (source).
- Early-career floor. Palantir's US range starts as low as $90,000 for some roles, while several postings require only 1+ years of experience (ghanemzadeh.com).
Outside the US
latchhire's tracker shows far less published non-US data, so treat these as thin samples: GBP median £105,000 (15 roles), EUR median €100,000 (7 roles), CAD median C$112,500 (3 roles), as of Oct 16, 2026 (latchhire).
Why FDEs are paid this much
Demand jumped faster than supply. Lightcast counted more than 5,200 US FDE postings in the first seven months of 2026, about four times all of 2025 (Lightcast). Fortune reported FDE postings up more than 1,000% for January to August 2026 versus the prior year (Fortune). The role also combines two scarce skill sets, software engineering and customer-facing delivery, and often involves significant travel. ghanemzadeh.com found that more than half of the roles stating a travel figure allow for 50% or more travel (source).
How to use this data in a negotiation
- Compare like for like. Posted ranges are base; levels.fyi is total comp. Ask the recruiter which number they are quoting.
- Anchor on the company's own band. In states with pay-transparency laws, the posting must show a range. Ask where in the band you are being placed and why.
- Price the travel. If a role is 50%+ on-site with customers, that is a reasonable lever for a higher base or a per-diem policy.
